The report shows a decrease in actual sales of approximately 24% from the same quarter last year. This update represents the sales from the 2008 holiday season. Only two of the city’s major business groups saw an increase in sales from a year ago: Family Apparel (0.4%), and Package Liquor Stores (14.6%). 23 out of the 25 major business groups in the city saw decreases in sales ranging from 1% to 43%.
The downward trend in sales is not isolated to Garden Grove. Orange County, southern California and the state as a whole all saw decreases at or approaching 20% from the same quarter a year ago. Locally, new auto sales continue to be significantly down, which suffered more so due to the closing of the Union Dodge dealership. Categories containing construction/home improvement type businesses continue to be down due to the slumping construction and home loan industry. The Service Stations category dropped 42% reflective of gasoline prices being almost half of what they were the previous year. As mentioned in previous updates, the good news for Garden Grove is that our sales tax revenue is well diversified. Over thirty businesses make up 50% of the City's sales tax revenue. No one business contributes more than 10% of the City's sales tax revenue.br>
In other news, the Garden Grove Agency for Community Development prepared and submitted its Annual Report and Five-Year Implementation Plan to the Agency Board at the Council Meeting on December 8, 2009, in compliance with California Community Redevelopment Law.
