Eight out of the top ten major business groups in the city saw decreases in sales ranging from 5.3% to 31.9%. Only two of the city’s major business groups saw an increase in sales from a year ago: Grocery Stores Liquor (0.7%), and Restaurants Liquor (4.0%).
Though negligibly negative, a positive indicator may be that the category New Motor Vehicle Dealers was only down 0.1%.
Accounting for a drop of almost $388,000, the Service Stations and Light Industrial/Printers categories were down 31.9% and 23.6% respectively. Lower fuel prices, lower consumption for gas stations and less business-to-business sales for the industrial category account for these drops.
As described in past quarterly updates, the downward trend in sales is not isolated to Garden Grove. Orange County, southern California and the state as a whole all saw double digit decreases from the same quarter a year ago. Locally, new auto sales continue to be down, but could see improvement with Garden Grove Hyundai’s move to the former Union Dodge location. However, this improvement might be slowed due to Toyota’s recent recall woes.
Categories containing construction/home improvement type businesses continue to be down due to the slumping construction and home loan industry. As described above, the Service Stations category dropped 32% reflective of lower gasoline prices and consumption. Again, Garden Grove’s sales tax revenue is well diversified. Over thirty businesses make up 50% of the City's sales tax revenue. No one business contributes more than 10% of the City's sales tax revenue.
