National Police Week

As police officers, we consciously make the decision to place ourselves in harm’s way, in order to serve the public we have sworn to protect. The risk is real. Every day, officers face harsh realities that could cause them harm.

I would like to share some facts about the hazards of police work reported by the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund:

• More than 14,250 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in the 20th Century. • The average age of the officers killed last century was 38 and the average length of service was approximately eight years. • Shootings accounted for about half of all police fatalities during the past century. • Approximately 500 officers were killed in multiple-police death incidents. • With 50 police deaths, September 11, 2001, was the deadliest day in law enforcement history.

On October 1, 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed Public Law 87-0726. This law designates the week containing May 15th, as National Police Week (sometimes known as Police Memorial Week).

On May 20th, please join the Garden Grove Police Department at our Annual “Call to Duty” Police Memorial Service, to honor the five Garden Grove Police officers who were killed in the line of duty.
